Gordon Robson had a day out in last Saturday's stableford competition winning on a count back from Shaun Taylor, both on 39 points in a field of 37.
Gordon's luck was certainly in, particularly when playing the tenth, having a wayward second shot heading towards the small retaining dam on the left but hitting a tree found the ball bounce over the dam and into the green so he could pick up a birdie.
Another player to benefit from trees was Tony Cash on the seventeenth as, when driving off the tee, went into the trees on the left hand side bounced through the fork of one of them hit another and bouncing into the green so he could pick up a par.
Sponsor of the day, Kim Wittwer and Troy Williams with CMV Truck Center, one sponsor on the eighteenth, in Kim Wittwer, combining two woods with his tee shot as he found the wood of a tree to see the ball bounce back on the fairway to pick up the longest drive for the day.
There were a couple who didn't have as much trouble with trees in Kingsley Handke and Ashley Gibson as they must have been looking where the trees were both having airies during the round, much to the amusement of Mike Semple who at last had a good round with 34 points.
One would think after all these years Lyndon Gill has worked out how to drive his cart particularly when driving on the tee blocks, this time managing to run over the tee marker and breaking it, must have forgotten what was in his path.
B Grade champion Jamie McPhee had a memory lapse as well although he hadn't started his round when he found out that he had left his golf buggy battery at home and had to go get it.
Michael Rigby-Meth was back to hack his way around the fairways, running into a bit of trouble on the fourteenth after his drive went to the right side of the fairway.
Next shot hit a tree and landed in the hazard about five meters behind his original drive, and then his third shot went into a tree and landed another ten meters behind him so he picked up his ball and moved on to the next hole.
Leigh Hiscock got a little help from his group as he amused them with plenty of entertainment of the fifteenth when he parked his buggy and was in the process of teeing off when his buggy started rolling down the hill.
Leigh, who has had a recent hip operation, looked fairly funny as he hobbled quickly to try and stop the buggy going over the edge and down towards the creek, particularly when he made a lunge to grab the buggy to stop it disappearing.
One of his partners in Andrew Pavy also had problems when presenting the prize for the day as he seemed to be on the end of a chain reaction of phone calls interrupting his presentation, much to the laughter of those present.
Apparently Eric March told those in his group as the start of play not to buy a meat tray raffle ticket as he would be the winner, sure enough he was, but he certainly didn't win anything else with just 24 points for the round.
Tim Formby having the longest hit to win the lucky card putt showed what a good putter he was in collecting the $85 jackpot.
The Captains Cup quarter finals were decided last Saturday the results seeing Mark Condon beat Peter McNulty 6/5, Sean Naylon downing Des Kelly 6/5, Brenton Roberts squeeze in 2/1 against Red Sorrell and Chris Barker up 4/3 against Derek Keane.
This Saturday's semi finals sees Mark Condon against Sean Naylon at 11:00am and Chris Barker take on Brenton Roberts at 11:07am.
It was a big thanks to co-captains Graeme Bertholini and Andrew Pavy for organising the Intra Club Pennants competition which has been brought about by the abandonment of the usual inter club pennants due to COVID-19.
The format was handicap match play which proved very popular and successful, with teams made up of men and women.
The end result showed there was not much separating the teams as play concluded with a much appreciated lunch with many members helping out.
Rankings after Round 1
7.5 - The Three Putts, 6 - The Up and Downs, 6 - The Shanks, 3 - The Happy Gilmores, 3 - The Chunks and 1.5 - The Aireys.
This Saturday is a stableford competition sponsored by Graeme
