It was the final round to qualify for the championships last Saturday in perfect weather and Andrew Hentschke, although not winning in A Grade on the day, had the lowest total score from two of the three qualifying rounds to finish on top of A Grade qualifiers and have a crack of adding to his list of championship wins.
Andrew finished with 80 off the stick, one less than Sean Naylon last Saturday, who won the putting with 26, but the nett winner in A Grade was Phil Perrin on 72 beating Randall Pitt with 73, enough for them to both scrape into the last eight in the championship.
It has been many years since 56 have hit off for the day and the winner of the day was Lachlan Williams with a nett 70 which enabled him to finish top of the B Grade championship qualifiers, while it was Damon Mayes with a nett 73 winning B Grade on the day from Gordon Robson 74, just enough to see him as the last qualifier in that grade.
It was a close call in C Grade for the day as Michael Formby, with a nett 71, beat Dave Pryor on a count back, Michael unfortunately not available, like others, to play in the championship play off's but Dave Pryor is in with a rough chance to secure that grade title.
Last Saturday sponsored by Frank Clennett, saw a few highlights to emerge, Gordon Robson doing a bit of hard thinking on the sixteenth, just getting over the creek then finding the trees before salvaging something when, despite the distance getting longer during the Calcutta night, putting in from twenty five meters.
Derek Keane, not going that well of late mentioned that he had plenty of shanks on the day, his best recovery from a shank on the thirteenth with the ball landing behind a bush but he executed a great pitch shot over the bush to save par.
Derek did mention that despite his golf going backwards he could be in with a chance of winning this Saturday's stroke competition sponsored by Leigh Hiscock, as most of the better players would be tied up in the championships.
Geoff Hall is another A Grader looking for a bit of form having missed the qualifying mark, last Saturday as one stage having the prize for the nearest second shot on the tenth, lobbing the ball on in two and asked what club he used said it was a sand wedge and then asked what type of sandwich, replying it was a corn beef one.
He must have then felt like a ham sandwich when lobbing nearest the pin on the par three fifteenth, only needing to sink a three foot putt for two but he was then trying to pull out of the putt as the ball moved, not quick enough as the club just touched the ball for it to move about a foot, so instead of a two went on to have a five on the hole.
Brian Simpson, fairly frugal on using new balls, had a few problems last Saturday, must have been using one of the best eight used balls out of a bucket that John Lee gave him during the week to keep him well supplied for many years.
Eric March certainly hung in there to pick up a place in the C Grade play off's but perhaps he has already picked up his prize in winning the meat tray on Saturday.
It was a big thanks to all those who came back on Saturday to make the Rump and Red night a success combined with the running of the Calcutta for the championships.
Graeme Bertholini and Andrew Pavy ran the night and hosted the auctions which saw some new members amazed as to how high the bidding went for some players, while others being auctioned couldn't believe that they struggled to get the bidders attention.
Jamie McPhee and Sean Naylon did a great job cooking the steaks, particularly when Andrew Pavy was asking those there if they wanted them well done, medium or rare, not getting much sense out of those present and in the end saying you get what you get.
Special mention to ladies, Leah Bertholini, Jo Cullen, Jenny Drury, Kylie Pavy, Carol Pelle, Jo Pickhaver and ladies forgotten, in making the wonderful salads, serving the food and other jobs that needed doing.
The bar staff for the night in Karen Robson, Chris Barker, Kingsley Handke and Randall Pitt also need a mention.
A normal stroke competition for non championship players will be played this Saturday hitting off before 9:00am or at 12:30pm after the last of the A Grade qualifiers.
