It is called the winter season for the club and this season has certainly been that, last Saturday no exception with rain and freezing weather, as Andrew Pavy tamed the conditions to win the day and to lead A Grade after the first round of the club championships
The sniff of the championships lured fifty two starters for the day to play in weather more suited to ducks, and there were plenty of them on the course, while the resident Kangaroos were smart enough to take cover amongst the trees.
Andrew Pavy came in with a gross 76 for the round, for a nett 71 to win the day, also taking out the A Grade monthly medal.
Runner-up in the A Grade championship list was Andrew Hentschke with 78 off the stick for a nett 72, and despite his drive on the par three eighth barely getting off the ground, it rolled on to the green and was unlucky not to pick up a hole in one, as the ball finished just six inches away from the hole.
It was an easy putt for Andrew but he could only finish equal second on the day's putting with 26, equal with Nobby who had 85 off the stick, while Brenton Roberts was the winner here with 25 putts, having 84 off the stick.
In B Grade it was Lachlan Williams leading the pack with a gross 89 and a nett 73, also the B Grade monthly medal winner over Ian Schroeter with a nett 75.
In C Grade, like most in the B Grade, all were able to pick up a century for the day, Peter McNulty on top here with 102 off the stick with a nett 75, to win the monthly medal from John Lee, out to show he does play in the rain, also with 102 off the stick for a nett 76.
At one stage John had no chance of a reasonable score with Frank Clennett blaming the bad weather for putting his total down on the card as 150 for John after nine holes, which certainly was in NAGA territory, but that again was taken out by Kooka with an unbelievable 176 off the stick.
Dave Pryor had the answer for the freezing weather as he put on his snow gloves to walk around the course and keep his hands warm but he looked more like a cricket keeper instead of a golfer and got caught out with 122 off the stick.
Perhaps Dave should have listened to Des Kelly, driving out in his buggy to tell this group that due to the conditions play had been called off and that they were all required back at the club house to help with the bar profits, to which Des retreated for the day to keep company weather expert Trevor Calaby, who admitted he read the weather wrongly, saying it would be alright to play as it wasn't raining when he left Macclesfield.
Gordon Robson was certainly on the pot for his round when, in front of the club house waiting for the rain to disappear, happened to shuffle backward to go arse up into the flower pot, to cause a bit of laughter, even wife Karen having a chuckle.
Gordon got his 'ton' for the day, and somehow was able to have four non penalty drops on the sixteenth to finish with eleven for the hole.
Allen Anderson thought he was playing in a Wednesday comp with his putt close enough to be able to pick the ball up, his partners quickly reminding him not to do so as it was Saturday.
His partners did certainly enjoy the free drink after from him as he had to cough up on the eighteenth, as his tee shot didn't even get close to making the ladies tee block.
Gaz Pitt was certainly making sure all knew he was playing on the day in his orange reflective wet weather pants, no doubt helping him come in with a solid 81 off the stick.
Kym Nelson also saw orange help him on the day, saying he thought the colour of his umbrella might put his opponents off, as he had 94 off the stick.
Sean Naylon had been finding a bit of trouble lately, this time on the tenth fairway with his drive seeing the ball lob at the butt of the tree for an unplayable lie, partner Mark Lynn not wanting to be outdone followed suit.
Tyson Roberts was a bit annoyed that he missed his chance to be in the running for the putting competition on the day, not much chance of that even before he had five putts on the eighteenth to have thirteen shots on the hole and a round of 135.
Speaking of putting, course curator Red Sorrell, not noted to turning up to play in the rain, learned his lesson, with 41 putts for the day to finish with 110 off the stick.
While Kirk Richardson couldn't keep up his winning form, with 87 off the stick, he did win the meat tray for the day, and it is believed that the card draw for the putting bonus was held, but due to a late finish it was in the dark as if anyone was able to sink the putt.
The Club would like to extend to the Klenke family best wishes and speedy recovery to Charlene after her recent accident.
This Saturday should at least see some warm weather to play in, it being the second qualifying round for the championships, and part of the Formby Shield, the day sponsored by Allen Anderson.
