Chris Barker was right back on championship pace last Saturday when he won the Stableford competition for the day on a count back from Kirk Richardson, both on 36 points, with 42 players on the course
While Kirk was trying to make it two Saturday wins in a row, it was fellow A Grader Chris Barker, back in form with 18 points on the front and back nine's, that saw him take the main prize for the day.
In B Grade Sean Walsh continues to perform well as he was the winner with 34 points over Lloyd Jackson and Lachlan Williams both on 30 points.
C Grade saw John Lee out again in the fine weather for yet another good round with 32 points but it was not good enough this time to win, that prize going to Clive Young with 33 on a count back from Dave Pryor.
Speaking of Dave, his nomadic group of Des Kelly, Brian Simpson and John Lee certainly started the day off well, none of them able to make the fairway on the first hole.
Des was a bit annoyed when he lost new balls on the sixth and seventh holes and Brian saw his opportunity for a chance to play with new balls for a change, mentioning to Des that he reckoned he knew where they were and would be back later to pick them up.
Trevor Calaby is never out of controversy on the course, this time after hitting off the fifth tee hit the trees and landed on the fourth fairway.
Cal proceeded to hit the ball back onto the right fairway next shot but then Sean Walsh, playing the fourth asked if anyone hit his ball, yep it was Cal, again hitting the wrong ball.
Nobby finished with a reasonable 32 for the day after playing in the Port Augusta open last week, going there for a bit of warmer weather, unfortunately it was a couple of coldest days that they had had there for a while.
Allen Anderson certainly got his priorities mixed up, arriving too late to play having been out to lunch to celebrate in being almost 80.
Sean Naylon apparently found the dam on the sixteenth but still had a playable shot after he shifted a small rock, which according to the laughing Gordon Robson got bigger and bigger and by the presentations was a big boulder at around 100 kilograms.
David Wright often mentioned in dispatches for his game, wondered if Kingsley Handke, covering more ground than the early settlers, would get in the write up about the cardinal sin he committed, as while Dave, having placed his stubbie on the ground before teeing off, noticed Kingsley with his clumsy feet empty the contents as he kicked it over.
Peter McNulty, normally high in the C Grade results, had problems on the day with 21, striking a bit of trouble on the fourteenth as his tee shot went into the drain, then had a drop and with the penalty was just over it after four shots and after two more shots was still well short of the green so picked it up.
While Phil Perrin was, according to his playing group, only hitting flop shots which continually made them duck, Derek Keane must have thought after his short shot off the third tee that his driver needed a bit of warming up, last seen hacking his way down the fairway with it.
There was no problems with tee shots from Damon Mayes on Saturday, hitting the middle of most fairways but it didn't do him any good on the tenth, down the middle to the corner to have an open shot at the green, but finishing up scrubbing the hole and then on the eleventh it was another accurate long shot off the tee for just one point in the end.
Kooka got a round of applause from the clubhouse gallery after he birdied the second hole, where he picked up all of his four points for the eighteen holes.
Frank Clennett survived a very tough day to come in with 32 points, having played with Michael Formby, Ryan Carpenter and Lachlan Williams, a search party almost sent out for them as their round lasted about five hours.
Red Sorrell, not a noted meat eater, must have his freeze just about full by now in winning the meat tray again and is close to being banned from buying anymore lucky squares.
Stuart Warnock, Kingsley Handke and Des Kelly were drawn out to try for the putting jackpot, Stuart certainly having a good feel of the odd looking putter he hadn't used before he looked like his touch had done the job, a bit stiff with putt going in the hole but somehow coming out again, giving a chance for the other two to collect but they were well short of the mark.
Players are reminded that after qualifying rounds finishing on September fifth for the Club Championship, a Calcutta will be held that night commencing around 8:30pm, with staggered meals, due to COVID-19, served between 6:30pm and 7:15pm at $20 per head for a menu of rump steak, sweet mashed potatoes, salad and one free drink.
Kids can eat free nuggets and chips.
This Saturday, sponsored by Jamie McPhee, is the first qualifying round of the championships with scores also counting for the Rayner Trophy, Formby Shield, Putting and Eclectic Awards at the end of the season.
