The previous Saturday Kirk Richardson had dropped back to B Grade but in losing that day on a count back, it was enough to put him back into A Grade and so he promptly won the competition comprising Stroke and Putting last Saturday with a nett 71.
It was a wet and miserable day Saturday which seems to be the weather pattern at Strathalbyn lately but there were still 33 finishers for the stroke and putting round with not too many really complaining about the cold and wet, well maybe three or four but who listens to them anyway.
Kirk's week long stay in B Grade must have done him the world of good, back in A Grade to produce 84 off the stick for a nett 71 with 28 putts, to deservedly win the day.
After the presentations Kirk, a new member this season, mentioned that he was starting to familiarise himself with the course and hopes to be in contention for the play offs for the championships with the qualifying rounds starting in a fortnights time.
Meat tray winner Andrew Hentschke was also close to winning the day but he was still the A Grade winner on 73 with 28 putts and according to his partners has found his groove again?.
Gee Andrew if we had known that we could have all helped you look for it. Runner up in A Grade was someone who now a bit more free time on his hands and spending more time on the course, Geoff Hall with a nett 74.
Perhaps Geoff had a good day because his regular partner didn't turn up because it was too wet, is that right Perry?, or was it because of the port he consumed half way during his round that warmed him up to the task.
Kym Nelson was ship shape again this Saturday, having won the week before, being top B Grade with a nett 73 and grabbing nearest the pin on the fifteenth, saying that despite the conditions, he was on fire.
Jamie McPhee was runner-up in B Grade with a nett 77, no doubt helped by his excellent putting on the day, having the least on anyone with a cool 25.
In C Grade Simon Jantke was the leader again with a nett 72 over the consistent Peter McNulty on a nett 77.
Now we all know the Irish are good for a yarn but Pete, really what's this as you are preparing to tee off first thing on Saturday morning in the dark, wet and foggy conditions with you wearing sunglasses?.
It must have been cold Saturday because Berties was seen wearing a pair of long socks with his shorts instead of his short ones, hard to believe he and a couple of others were wearing shorts.
Putting woes hit a few players on the day, Gordon Robson had reasonable low 14 putts on the front nine but four of them came on the ninth hole, while Andrew Pavy had a rough day despite getting nearest the pin on the seventeenth, which he birdied and he was also nearest the pin on the par three sixth but a bit embarrassed taking three putts to get the ball in the hole.
Lachlan Williams finished way down in B Grade with a nett 91, apparently having some golf lessons to improve his game but in trying to implement them came unstuck, however practice makes perfect?.
Life member and former club champion and Power supporter Frank Clennett was certainly on a high Saturday night, being just a bit more delirious than on the golf course as he reckoned that Saturday's conditions were the best for a long time to play golf in, as it reminded him of the old mother country.
It was a wonder he even saw Power beat Richmond with the overcast conditions also affecting Franks eyesight at golf, as he went to putt, so he thought was his ball, only to be told it was Cal's ball, as his landed about twenty meters short of the sixteenth green, Trevor certainly giving him plenty of advice.
Speaking of Trevor he also had problems with his sight after he and Dave Klenke drove off the ninth, Cal proceeding to where he thought his ball landed, took out an iron and hit a long fairway shot only to be told "you hit the wrong ball" yes it was 'Klenks' he hit.
Trevor still thought he was teeing off well and that he had won the long drive on the ninth, only to be told after he had put his name down on the card it was for the tee shot on the eighteenth hole, which he must have thought he was playing, which is the eighteenth second time around, the different tee off making it just a bit longer hole.
Perhaps age is catching up with Cal's memory but it should be restored now thanks to sponsor of the day, the hard working volunteer for the club Des Kelly, as among the other array of wonderful prizes, he gave a little prize for the oldest golfer playing on the day and it was Cal at 80, who received a special six pack brew, that will keep him coming back for a few more rounds yet.
Remember the championship qualifying rounds start on August 22 and this Saturday's competition is Stableford, sponsored by Design & Go Live.
