Kym Nelson has certainly found a bit of form this season, and with no weather elements to complain about for everyone's favourite par round last Saturday, he sailed home to win with a +5.
With forty one players hitting off there were only five players who managed a plus for the day, with the rest very under par.
Kym with other B grader Kirk Richardson didn't seem to have any problems at all with Nels reminding everyone just who the winner was.
Kym was +2 on the front nine and +3 on the back nine, to win the day on a count back from Kirk who also had nearest the pin on the fifteenth.
A Grade winner Graeme Bertholini was the only positive player in this division with +2 and deserved to end up top and while playing with Andrew Hentschke, who out drove him on the twelfth to win the longest drive for the day and then saying he was looking for a birdie, only to finish with a par, Graeme certainly did enjoy telling everyone he was the one to birdie the hole.
Runner-up in A Grade was Stuart Warnock with -1, working his way up the grade to be in contention for the championships starting August 22nd.
While the B Grade went to Kirk Richardson he, with runner-up Ryan Carpenter on +1 sees both these players making their presence felt in this grade.
Fair weather player John Lee had that winning feeling again as he took out the C Grade with -1 and the 'old stager' Trevor Calaby was runner-up with -2.
Speaking of Trevor again, the previous Saturday he decided to use a new ball and after teeing off on the first got to the corner of the fairway but his second shot headed towards the small retaining dam on the left amongst the trees and after looking for the ball he decided to scrub the hole.
The following Monday having a bit of practice, he had another look for his ball but no luck so he was back for the Wednesday's comp, this time with a plastic rake and walked straight to the dam and to his excitement found his new golf ball in the water.
So the moral of the story is, after three attempts to find your ball, ask Cal for a loan of his rake.
Davy Wright, could you please explain how come your short tee shot on the second hole carried about two millimeters, in fact your tee went further, and is that why you changed from your long pants into your shorts to be in line with your drives.
Doesn't happen very often but the group of Red, Nobby, Schroet's and Dennis Gatehouse all pared the sixth, and to celebrate the whisper was, that they informed Red that they would all be around to his place for a B.B.Q. after he won the meat tray, Red not so sure about that, only getting as far as to saying that would be okay at about half past.
Early bird Mark Condon was consistent with -4 on the front nine and as his putter let him down still, he backed that up with another -4 on the back nine and was a bit concerned he might pick up the NAGA award.
Luckily Allen Anderson turned up shortly after with his card showing -9, as his partners said he was the master of three putts as he tried out a new putter, also resembling Kooka with his putting style.
It was the end of a terrific week for Al, as last Thursday he went out to the course to help Des Kelly to cut up some wood and as Des was about to use his chain saw to start cutting, he looked across at Al and started to laugh, as instead of bringing his chain saw to give Des a hand, he emerged with a hedge trimmer, 'good one' Al, probably thought he was only going to trim the leaves off the wood.
Kim Wittwer had an ordinary day with -6, but there was one highlight in his game, that in scoring an eagle on the dam hole with his third chip shot going in, the shot getting longer, up to 120 meters, as he told us how he did it, his partners saying that he couldn't hit his driver that far.
Geoff Hall certainly didn't learn from his Wednesday experience in playing the fourteenth hole, again finishing on the hill above the green, and with the new grass just put in to cover the bare dirt before the green saw his short shot with the putter not able to roll onto the green, and he did the same trick on Saturday.
Damon Mayes was at it again spraying his tee shots, this time getting into trouble from the ladies, as he landed on the fairway they were playing on three times, to interrupt their game.
He did however, like most of his group, get it right on the second hole in, out driving big hitter Chris Barker whose tee shot went 60 meters high to land about 20 meters away.
Thanks to Peter Potbury for sponsoring the day and even before the day was played he had prepared a special award for the NAGA winner, with the persons name on it and would you believe he got it right, it was Kooka with a -18.
After being called up to receive his award Kooka, with a big smile on his face, said he was excited and looking forward to the prize of a free golf lesson. reckon it will be very interesting to watch.
A big thanks to Red Sorrell, Michael Formby, Dennis Gatehouse, Troy Williams, Kim Wittwer and Kooka for their work on laying the new grass about the fifth/fourteenth green to improve this area, much appreciated.
This Saturday's competition is a Stroke round incorporating the monthly medal, Rayner Trophy, Putting, Ecelectic and points for the Formby Shield, with Des Kelly the sponsor.
With the new score cards players are asked to fill out all applicable sections and to put full christian and surnames on it, as well as on the clubhouse score board and not nicknames.
With three weeks before the club championships start its a great time of year to be out playing golf and preparing for the event.
As there has been a certain lady called Karen interstate making a bad name for herself and all "Karens" that Strathalbyn Golf Club has the most wonderful Karen in the world, who helps in making the bar and clubhouse run successfully throughout the season and is a much appreciated volunteer and member with this sporting body.
