Carpenter nails the points

With the weather absolutely perfect, the course and greens looking the best they ever have, the day was just right for a couple of golfers to blitz the course in a field of 50 and come in with outstanding results, they being Ryan Carpenter on 41 and John Lee on 40 points.

Ryan Carpenter won the day with his 41 stableford points, having had 85 off the stick, collecting 22 points on the front nine add 19 on the back nine.

Ryan one of the club's up and coming golfers, also gained nearest the pin on the sixth hole, picking up a birdie two for four points, as he slowly works his way to being one of the top B Grade contenders for the championships which start on August 22.

One of the club co-captains Andrew Pavy with 37 points, was winner of A Grade for the day, on a count back from Troy Williams.

It has been a long time since eighteen A Grade players have teed off for a round of golf at the club, twelve of them finishing with 30 or more points.

With the quality of players in this competition it should be one of the most competitive A Grade championships the club has had for a long time.

Another player slowly working his way up to the top of B Grade standings is Lachie Williams, winning that grade on Saturday with 36 points on a count back from the consistent Sean Walsh, with twelve players finishing with 30 or more points, perhaps the new index on the cards is helping some golfers.

Well done to John Lee who played outstanding golf to win the C Grade competition on Saturday with 40 points, 21 on the front nine and 19 on the back.

Runner-up in C Grade was Alan Bailey with 37 points, both of these players were well ahead of their nearest rivals.

Speaking of John Lee he had his work cut out trying to concentrate as his playing partners Allen Anderson, Dennis Gatehouse and Trevor Calaby all covered more ground than Ned Kelly did in his life time.

They couldn't drive, couldn't chip, were woeful putting and to top it all off, not one but the three of them, all hit their golf balls into the dam.

Allen Anderson once again had the best excuse saying "I left my gold shoes at home", come on Al what have your golf shoes got to do with poor golf.

Trevor Calaby not only is an outstanding sports person but can tell a funny joke about his memories, as he did on Saturday and if he can remember them he might spin the same yarn again some day.

Talking about memories, Damon Mayes left his car keys on the bar the previous Saturday when signing in, this week he forgot to sign his card.

When asked how their round of golf played out, the group of Davey Wright, Kim Wittwer and Troy Williams said that between them there were only four bad holes, guess that's why they all finished near the top of their grades.

What were Justin Baker and David Bottroff both doing on the other side of the twelfth fairway after their drives from the eighteenth tee block veered horribly to the right.

Luckily Kim Wittwer was watching or he might have had a sore leg from a miss hit, with his accuracy it was a wonder how Botty had the longest drive for the nineteen plus handicappers.

Geoff Hall had some good advice for partner Perry Jones who was trying to get a bit more loft on the ball off the tee by using a longer tee.

It certainly did the trick on the fifth hole, as the ball got heaps of height but unfortunately it landed only a couple of meters away.

Peter Potbury, this Saturdays sponsor, was out for a look on Saturday, someone saying he should be right to play next week, as he said was itching to play again, the itch however was from the strappings on his wrist which he broke just a couple of weeks ago.

While he didn't, apparently Kingsley Handke had a head problem thinking he might pick up the NAGA award from Kooka for the day with 18, but hopefully Doc Warren sorted that problem out for any future worries last Monday.

Nobby was well down the list in A Grade with just 25 points but he was still a winner, as his number came out for the meat tray.

This Saturdays competition is a Par Round with points also for the Formby Shield, with players reminded to fill up their sand buckets and fill up divots found on the fourth and thirteenth fairways.

There must be plenty of divots not being filled in as Don Bells' early bird group emptied their buckets not far down the designated fairway last Saturday.

Finally a big thank you to Red Sorrell, Michael Formby, Dennis Gatehouse, Troy Williams, Kim Wittwer and Kooka for transplanting a large section of turf from the practice fairway to the top side of the fifth green on Monday, the turfed area is GUR and relief must be taken in the drop zones marked with white circles.
