Brenton Roberts on a countback

Having been around the mark for several weeks now, Brenton Roberts changed his tactics last Saturday to come out early for the par competition, which saw him win the day on a count back from the president Randall Pitt.

Robbo finished up square for the eighteen holes but was lucky to win the day as Randall was hitting the ball well before he had trouble with his cart and having to change to another, so he went from a plus three with three holes to go and finished with three minus efforts.

It was a three way count back in B Grade with Don Bell the winner with -2 from Ryan Carpenter and Ian Schroeter.

Don was also congratulated on the excellent work he has done to keep the greens in top order, Allen Anderson asking if he could do something about the worm problem, Derek Keane quickly commenting to Allen that he could take tablets if he had problems with worms.

In C Grade the winner was Simon Jantke with +3, not eligible to be the winner of the day, in not being a member.

Runner-up in C Grade was Michael Formby with -4 on a day sponsored by Gordon Robson, who, not keen to win his own prize, came in with a magnificent -12 and then couldn't even get the putting prize in the lucky card draw.

Des Kelly missed the chance in the putting competition, like the easy putts he missed in his round of -7 but he did have a plus moment on the day, as his number was drawn out to win the meat tray.

Allen Anderson won the longest drive on the fifth, a far better effort was seen on the third when his tee shot hit a tree and finished up behind him, playing partner Frank Clennett mentioning that normally if one can not reach the ladies tee then one should buy all in the group a round of drinks at the end of the day, then wondering if it should not be another round as he didn't reach the men's tee as well.

Chris Barker won the longest drive for A Grade on the 14th, despite Kim Wittwer trying to convince his partner Troy Williams that his shot was the longest drive, but he had lied, then Troy was sure he had nearest the pin on the sixth off the tee but he putted without marking the ball, so he missed that prize as well, as Robbo picked it up.

To add salt into the wounds Kim Wittwer was nearest the pin the next time around being the fifteenth.

The other nearest the pins were Mark Condon on the eighth, his only bright spot for the day with a -7, Nobby taking the prize on the seventeenth.

Dave Pryor started off well but finished with a -8, his game falling apart from the third when starting to drink his ice coffee, Brian Simpson asking him if it was out of date, like recently when he found his ice coffee was six month passed it's use by date after he had finished it.

Kim Wittwer almost sustained injury on the thirteenth thanks to Brian, who is getting a lot better off the tee a lot better with his new driver.

His partners Kingsley Handke and Dave Pryor told him not to hit his tee shot as there was a group in front of them on the fairway.

Brian however proceeded to hit an exceptionally long ball seeing it bounce through between Kim Wittwer and his buggy.

Perhaps Brian should have used that siren canister that he blew into someone's ear on opening day and again in the clubhouse on Saturday when getting his pie, to warn Kim that the ball was coming at him.

David Wright could have also used the siren as he showed pin point accuracy on the fairway, managing to hit Mark Condon with one of his shots, perhaps account for Mark's -7 for the day.

Lyndon Gill, like Qantas at the moment, certainly had a few problems getting off the ground, to come in with -9.

Michael Rigby-Meth had problems getting around with his crook knee, ending up with -14, as he managed to slice the ball into the dam off the fourteenth, to keep hobbling along, as he did on the sixteenth when trying to use the path to roll the ball down the hill and over the creek onto the fairway only to lose it.

The best non performer again was Kooka with the maximum -18. having a chance on the fifteenth to stop the run of outs but as he belted the putt towards the hole, the ball bounced off the back of the cup and out.

This Saturday is a stableford competition with points towards the Formby Shield, Kym Nelson the sponsor.
