Pitt & MacAuley an awesome foursome

The club's foursome stroke championships were played last Saturday and Gaz Pitt with partner Don MacAuley came out as A Grade winners, for what turned out to be an unusually sunny day so far in this winter season.

The day, sponsored by Bleasdale, attracted forty six players to the course, as Gaz and Don came home with 82 off the stick in A Grade with a nett 72.5, while B Grade the winning combination was Ryan Carpenter and Lochie Williams with 89 off the stick with a nett 78.5.

It was certainly a game of fluctuating fortunes as players naturally were put in unusual spots by their partners, Andrew Smith winning the best acrobatic shot of the day when, off the fourth tee, Allen Anderson left him in the nut grass off the fairway, so Andrew, being confident he could blast the ball out of it, took a huge swing only to land on his behind, Allen saying that the ball only moved because the divot of dirt hit it.

Andrew however, along with Peter Potbury, was a long drive winner for the day, and he will be pleased when he gets his new shoes soon with spikes on them.

Clive Young and Alan Bailey had a fluctuating day, just one of the many to break the 'ton' as they had a ten on the sixteenth, then quickly corrected their game to have a birdie two on the par three seventeenth, Alan also having a bit of luck in winning the meat tray for the day.

Trevor Calaby and Dennis Gatehouse must have had an eventful day as they had no trouble with the highest score of the day with 112, closely followed by. thanks for some poor hitting, Kingsley Handke and Tim Formby on 111.

While the new bright red and white flags on the pin markers were a bonus to those approaching the hole they certainly didn't help Tim Formby's vision, as he often tried to use his driver on the fairway to get to the green quick but might have well just used his putter to get the same distance that he did.

There were some exceptional drives on the day, Eric March boasting how he had his best drive on the sixteenth, lucky not to hit Nobby on the head in the process, while Geoff Hall teeing off from the fourth, with a nice slice, left his partner Mike Semple on the ninth fairway, and Andrew Pavy, with help from Graeme Bertholini, made a big splash for the day, that was in getting out of the drain on the fourth.

Graeme was also popular with the rest of the players for not only getting Andrew in trouble but to be drawn out to have a go at claiming the $80 jackpot putting competition at the end of day and winning it to place the money on the bar.

Ian Schroeter must have been a bit unsettled when Kooka left him close to the fence on the third requiring him to make a left handed shot resulting in an "airie" so then, having to hit off on the fourth couldn't reach the ladies tee off.

As mentioned before putting brought many combinations undone for the day, Dave Klenke with a long put on the sixteenth put Jamie McPhee within centimeters of the hole but he missed, as the club disappeared out of his hands, while the combination of Red Sorrell with Perry Jones got on the par five sixteenth in three to walk off with a seven, Red too often leaving his partner with too many short putts to miss.

Tyson Roberts had problems with his putter needing his mum Sally to finish of most holes, she even having to cope with being left in tight positions, particularly when squeezing one out near the gobble bush, but while not playing in the competition, did a special award for having a nett 75.5.

Speaking of the Roberts, Brenton and Matt were playing together and were looking good to win the A Grade competition, but they had double bogies on the last two holes for 83 off the stick with a nett score of 69.5.

This Saturday the rain could return for a much loved Par competition, counting towards the Formby Shield, and sponsored by Gordy Robson.
