Carpenter chisels out a victory and medal win

As part of last Saturday's stroke round, it incorporated the Monthly Medal Competition, points for the Formby Shield, a round of the Rayner Trophy, along with putts counting.

Winner of the day and relative new player to the club, was Ryan Carpenter who, having played early missed all the bad weather, to win the C Grade Monthly Medal, and was also the winner of the day with 93 off the stick for a nett 66 and having 31 putts, along with the longest drive for 20-36 handicappers on the twelfth.

In A Grade the medal winner, in a strong field of sixteen, was Andrew Pavy, braving the conditions to hit 80 off the stick for a nett 75, to beat late starter Brenton Roberts on a count back, who had 85 off the stick.

In B Grade it was sponsor of the day Damon Mayes, in early with a nett 74, to win the medal from last week's comp winner Kym Nelson on 79, who looked like a drowned rat at the end of the day, having started with seven on the first hole and then had an eight on the fourteenth.

The putting competition went to Andrew Hentschke with 26 putts for the day, beating Don Bell with 27, while Brenton Roberts and Andrew Pavy both had 28.

Some certainly had trouble finding the hole as Peter Potbury and Simon Jantke had 37 putts, followed by Kym Nelson with 36, twenty one of them on the front nine.

Of the thirty three starters there were a few lasted just four holes due to the weather, as Trevor Calaby and Tim Formby left Dave Klenke stranded on the fifth tee with no one to play with.

Trevor was quite content to be back in the clubhouse having an ale and tucking into a hot pie, also happy making the prediction that the bad weather, which had fined up a bit, would be back around two o'clock and he as usual was spot on.

However after Trevor and Tim had pulled out, in the next group following Perry Jones, not traveling that well, kindly decided to pull the pin as well, to allow Dave to continue with son Graham and Kingsley Handke, Dave still using his broken umbrella to try and keep the rain out but it flowed off his bald head just as well.

It certainly wasn't a day for cricket but president Randall Pitt must have thought it was, saying he had plenty of cover drives and shots through mid wicket to bring up his first ton in quite a while, he and Derek having a century partnership after the first nine holes.

Randall, who won the meat try raffle, was not the only century maker, with Ian Schroeter top scorer off the stick with 111, Dave Klenke on 108, Kingsley Handke, despite chipping in for three on the eighth, notching up 105, getting eight on two holes and a ten on the seventh, thanks to trees.

Joining this elite group was Kooka on 101, looking for nearest the pin, second shot prize, on the eighteenth, being just a foot away from the hole but it was only for 0-19 handicappers, well inside his handicap.

Simon Jantke and Dave Wright also held their bats up high as they both scored 100.

Nobby was back to complete the course this Saturday and with no airies was able to win nearest the pin, second shot on the eighteenth for the 0-19 handicappers, having a nett 77 on the day.

While there were a couple of eagles for the day flying around the course, Sean Naylon was happy to pick up a birdie on the sixteenth to lift his performance, going well to start with, a par on each of the first two holes but then having nine of the part five third, still finishing with 85 off the stick.

Stuart Warnock also had a reasonable 86 off the stick but had trouble on the twelfth, walking all the way up to the hole after his second hot, not taking any notice that Nobby was waving at him indicating that his ball had gone over the green to be out of bounds, saying he thought he could play it somewhere around where it went out, under the new rules brought in to speed up the game but the club had no local rules covering this situation so back he trudged to play his shot again.

Frank Clennett was still trying to get his handicap to go out and he certainly is on track after amusingly saying that, after going into the dam twice on the sixteenth he had a ten, the first time in thirty years that he had recorded such a score on a hole.

The weather certainly got to Des Kelly having a 91 off the stick, then wandering around in the clubhouse afterwards looking for his glasses, only to be pointed out that they were hanging down the front of his shirt where he had put them, after trying to read the other scores on the board and like others trying to decipher the real names and nick names on it.

Believe Des and Randall were doing a bit of cattle rustling on the course the next day before a hire group could play, yep the neighbour's cattle getting loose again onto the course, not really good for the course, saturated by the overnight rain, as they don't carry sand buckets to fill up their divots.

Nearest the pins off the tee for the day went to Brenton Roberts on the 6th, Andrew Hentschke on the 8th, Mark Condon on the 15th., despite not signing his card and the round not counting, and Gordon Robson on the 17th.

The $75 jackpot prize for the lucky card draw for putting continued to grow as Sean Walsh, Kirk Richardson and Sean Naylon all missed.

This Saturday it will be a Foursomes Championship, sponsored by Bleasdale Wines.
