While a lot of players were all at sea with yet another windy and rainy day, it didn't effect Nelson's plan of attack, as Kym came in with an admirable score of 36 Stableford points to win the competition.
Kym, as the weather deteriorated, had a steady game and showed plenty of concentration which he had to in playing with Jamie McPhee, the wind not effecting his game as he normally sprays his shots and Kooka, who had the distinction again of winning the NAGA award with just five points.
Kooka got four of them on the par three six, being nearest the pin and dropping the putt in from two feet away.
On the tenth Kooka was calling up an Uber for a lift to retrieve his ball after he hit it out of bounds, but he said he persevered to finish the round so he could claim his nearest the pin.
While Don Bell won the B Grade with 34, it was early starter Trevor Calaby, saying how well he played for the day, taking home the C Grade with 31 points.
Kym Nelson, before he took to the course to win the day, presented Trev with a nice etching of he and his wife, comment made that perhaps Trev, despite his pacemaker working well, looked like he needed to use the defibrillator that he had so generously donated to the club.
There were a couple of groups amongst the twenty nine players participating who didn't finish the day sponsored by John Lee, due to the weather, Kingsley Handke and Perry Jones taking sympathy with Mike Semple who had just seven points on the first nine, to give it away after eleven holes.
Mike however almost had two birdies on the ninth as he hit the branch they were sitting on in the big tree to the left, near the eighth hole.
Derek Keane, Ian Schroeter and Randall Pitt were late starters, Derek indicating that the former group were a bit weak, but he found the conditions tough, commenting that to beat the longest drive by Chris Barker on the third, scored in better conditions earlier, that it would take two hits to reach the mark.
Then on the fifth tee off Derek's group were hanging around for a while and they too buckled to pull the pin.
Perhaps these two groups should have been like Nobby earlier in the day, having had two airies on the first tee block, then quitting and passed by several players going out to the course, walking back on the roadside to Strathalbyn.
Damon Mayes started well with pars on the first two holes but on the third was back to his normal style slicing the ball off the tee, then finding tree trouble and going into the ditch, then hitting another tree before scratching the hole.
Damon however was quite pleased that he scored a birdie on the eighth, and thought he might be in with a chance of another one the sixteenth after his first shot.
Next shot went over the dam and landed on the green, unfortunately it was the thirteenth green the ball lobbed in but he still had 34 points for the day.
Frank Clennett was certainly trying to get his handicap to go out and he could with only 22 points, reported that Des Kelly didn't offer him a ride in his cart but did lend Frank his driver for the day that had a bit more whip in to make sure he had a few wayward shots to come in with an average score.
While Dave Wright kept walking after going in the creek on the the sixteenth, Peter Potbury had some entertaining hits on the sixteenth, lining up his third shot only to see it bounce well enough to hit the top wire on the boundary fence and go out of bounds.
Just to make sure that it was no fluke, his next shot went straight out of of bounds and over the road.
Brenton Roberts, a master in the recent wet conditions, came in to win A Grade with 33 points, but son Tyson, who has been burning the course up lately, came back to earth or was trying to keep his handicap from plummeting, with just 16 points, comment made by Brenton that playing at Kapunda beforehand taught him some bad habits.
While Chris Barker won the long drive, nearest the pins were Kooka on the sixth, Gordon Robson on the eighth, who just made the ladies tee off on the third and not much better the second time around on the twelfth, as his tee shot went sideways over the eleventh green and Kym Nelson on the fifteenth, with no one recorded on the seventeenth.
Meat tray winner, the last to buy a ticket, was Kim Wittwer with number 26.
Next Saturday, sponsored by Damon Mayes looks like another wet one for a stroke round, incorporating points for the Formby Shield, Rayner Trophy, Putting and Eclectic Awards for the season.
