Good turn out for opening day

Despite it being a long weekend there was still a good turn out for the club's delayed opening day, when forty three players participated in an Ambrose competition

Thanks to chefs Kingsley and Kooka, a barbecue prepared meal warmed the players up before the start, in what turned out to be a fine but chilly day in the end.

President Randall Pitt welcomed those in attendance commenting on how well the course is looking at the moment and hoped all would enjoy the coming winter season, before inviting course curator and life member Red Sorrell, to open the season with one of his better tee shots.

The teams were selected by new co-captains of the club in Graeme Bertholini and Andrew Pavy, they mentioned that pennants could still be played this season and that the club had entered into two of the grades, several indicating that they would be willing to play pennants.

Winners of the Ambrose on the day contained a couple of strangers in Mike Semple and son Ben who haven't been seen for a

while, as they helped out David Wright and Dennis Gatehouse, the group on target for victory when they birdied the first three holes.

After being piped at the post the Saturday before, Dave must have been pleased to be part of a winning team but they certainly had trouble getting two mandatory off the tee from him, due to the big hitting of Ben, the team having no choice but to use his second mandatory drive on the last hole.

Getting the Naga award last Saturday were the combination of John Lee, Red Sorrell, Perry Jones and Barry Blucher, Red the standout, as the team relied on him to get them off the tee with any distance for twelve of the holes, while his partners were playing all sorts of trick shots, John Lee's a classic on the sixteenth as when all his partners diced with the dam on the third shot, he used the big tree blocking the path to the green on the corner to ricochet off it and leave the ball only a meter off the green, alas still not picking up a birdie for the day.

It was three birdies in the first five holes for the team of Brian Simpson, Kooka, Dave and Graham Klenke, but the experience on the day left Dave a bit deaf as Brian, at the clubhouse tee off, discovered that the cap on the gas filled canister to sound the siren for the shotgun start had blown off, so he proceeded to put it back on only to set it off right in Dave's ear.

Kooka whose golf is up and down like a yo-yo, was quite pleased on his effort to out drive big hitting Graham Klenke, despite hitting three trees but it was still only on a par three.

The team finished sixth to win a voucher each, Graeme Bertholini in handing them out saying that would probably be the only voucher for Kooka for the season.

Nobby must have thought he was in for a good day with his new driver and fairway wood but he obviously didn't get much help from his crew of Rigas, Don Bell and Peter Potbury, finishing seventh for the day.

While new co-captain Graeme Bertholini was finishing second in playing with Peter McNulty, Frank Clennett and Kim Nelson, Gordon Robson was a bit disappointed in the other co-captain Andrew Pavy being a bit rusty, as he along with Kym Wittwer and Sean Butler were counting on him to win the day instead of finishing fourth.

Third place getters had champion A Grade player Andrew Hentschke in their side but he and other members Mick Beasley and Allen Anderson, had to rely on veteran Trevor Calaby to carry them all day.

Nearest the pin prizes for the day went to Derek Keane on the 6th, Frank Clennett 8th, Graham Klenke 15th and Graeme Bertholini on the 17th.

Longest drive for the 0-19 handicappers was picked up by Andrew Pavy but the winner for the 20-36 handicappers was a bit of a mystery , the marker moved several times but no name on it.
