Par competition was certainly a Mayes

In just about perfect conditions for last Saturdays par competition with 43 starters, Damon Mayes came up with a +4 to win the day, after losing on a countback the previous Saturday.

It had been reported that Damon has been out practicing just about all week with his new driver to try and eliminate some of his bad habits, which he must have, also being one of the early birds on Saturday believed to have hit off around 6:30am, having no grizzles like other players who had to content with the unexpected light rain for a short period.

Red Sorrell in his return to A Grade was the only positive player for the day in that grade with +1, to beat Randall Pitt and Troy Williams both on -1.

In B Grade, besides Damon winning the day with +4, the next best in this grade were Michael Beasley and Brenton Welk both square on the day.

In C Grade Henry Kelly , a provisional player, came in with +4, followed by Simon Jantke with +3, Erik Heyns and Robert Lyon with +2.

A Grade player Mark Condon, one of the early birds, had a great start to the day not finishing the first six holes to be -6 but he held his own after that with a final score of -7.

Irish man Peter McNulty still finished with +1 in C Grade after having one memorable hole, landing on in four but then proceeding to have three putts before completing the hole.

Trees seemed to be a problem again, Derek Keane a bit annoyed that just about each time he had a good shot off the tee the ball landed behind a tree, which cost him shots, as he finished with -4.

Tim Formby said he was lucky to miss Hobbit Hollow on the fourteenth but the sixteenth certainly sorted him out with four hits and four trees hit, as he found himself having to hit from the water's edge in the dam.

While Kingsley Handke and Perry Jones were having a bit of luck in hitting trees and finishing on the fairway, playing partner Gordon Robson certainly had a day out, more entertaining that former player Jason Ridge's effort on Holey Moley.

Gordon starting on the first hole, saw his tee shot flying off to the left making him chip back past trees onto the fairway, not content in getting into trouble his next shot went well over the first corner and into the next forest and while he was looking for his ball, Kingsley had time to eat his banana, Perry mentioning that it might be a bad idea to give it to Gordon as he swung from tree to tree looking for his ball, which he did on the other side of the boundary fence and the first hole scrubbed.

Gordon was showing great ability to reach the green with a nine iron but he was all at sea after the fifth when approaching the green as he lost his head, that was off the nine iron, much to the amusement of his partners.

Not done with yet Gordon had a great shot of the fourteenth tee, his ball going high and left to finish just short of the drain not far from the tee block.

Other member of the group Bruce Carr then did even better off the tee at the same hole, somehow just getting the club on the ball for a short chip shot which was as far as the bush on the left hand side a couple of meters off the tee block, only to drop and roll into the butt of the bush with no real shot to play, so he picked up the ball and conceded the hole.

Bruce looked like he was going to get nearest the pin on the fifteenth but his ball was next to the pin holder so his name didn't appear on the card inside it.

Bruce repeated the dose on the par three seventeenth to miss out on a prize again but he did have the pleasure of putting on off the green for a birdie.

Des Kelly was winning everything at the start, well that was in picking two winners at the races, as he came in with -1 but he still had another win coming his way in picking up the meat tray raffle prize.

Next Saturday's round is a stableford competition.
