Graeme Noble and Damon Mayes put on a golfing clinic

46 starters braved the changeable conditions at the Strathalbyn Golf Club last Saturday for the fourth round of the Coopers Mild Summer Cup, with Graeme Noble and Damon Mayes putting on a show both coming in with a nett 67.

Graeme Noble was the one who survived the countback to take the top honours for the day, Graeme had an impressive 39 on the front nine and followed that up with an even more impressive 38 on the back nine, Damon Mayes kept in touch with a 43 and 44 respectively but an eight late on the back nine sealed his fate.

Their playing partners Tony Cash and Des Kelly were left in awe watching Noble and Mayes duke it out and both said they were just along for the ride.

Damon Mayes did have some luck on the third hole after a tee shot that went straight down the middle off the fairway, he hit his second left into the trees over the drain, not wanting to walk back if he couldn't find it played a provisional and proceeded to put that ball in the exact same spot, so he played a second provisional and had the exact same result, thankfully all three balls were found and he was able to play the original.

Michael Formby had a very eventful day, finding the car park on the second hole, following it up with an airie on the third tee block and then in making sure he didn't have another airie on the fourth tee block over corrected sent the ball up to the heavens, after all that he still came in with a very respectable nett 73.

The NAGA Award was again easily won by Kooka who had a well lets say average start of 31 strokes after three holes, the third hole summed up the day as after an excellent tee shot down the middle of the correct fairway, hit his second shot that ended up in the trees behind the eighth green.

Kerry Vine who was out to hand in the final card to get an official handicap went through the full range of emotions on the seventh, after hitting his tee shot left into the trees and hearing a loud wooden clunk played a provisional, and just like Damon Mayes he didn't play the provisional any better as it clattered of the tree also, luckily both balls bounced off the tree and onto the fairway.

His luck soon ran out though when he heard the dreaded splash of the ball going into the dam, after the penalty drop and a few more shots he finished the hole and walked away with a ten.

Kerry's playing partner John Lee was not much help either, on the sixteenth both John and Kerry were near the fence by the road, John was clearing all the bark away from his ball, only problem was that he was throwing the bark onto Kerry's ball and covering it up, Kerry are you sure that John is your friend?

Their playing partners Randall Pitt and Derek Keane must have had very average day as both Kerry and John said they learnt new words they had never heard before and every one of those words would have made a sailor blush.

Speaking of Randall I wonder if he used any of those words when he found out he won the meat tray raffle?

There was yet another eagle sighting on the course last Saturday as Stuart Warnock sunk a seven foot putt to secure the eagle on the par five seventh.

Next week is a par competition, hope to see you all there.
